Big sister had helped mom all through labor and birth. At only 6 years old, she was quite the doula. Here, she lightly touches her newborn sister. This was captured shortly after sunrise on a winter morning, there was natural light in the room, but not much. I wanted to get those beautiful tones of blue umbilical cord and pink baby, so I bounced an on-camera flash off the ceiling for this shot.

Gretchen Yost is a documentary and fine art photographer based in the small, mountain community of Pinedale, Wyoming. Gretchen is drawn to documenting the art of childhood, especially as lived by her two girls, in the big, wild country of Wyoming. Although she's had a camera in her hand since age 9, Gretchen also enjoys camping, hiking, coffee, backpacking, skiing, wine, fishing, hunting, knitting, sewing and reading, especially with her kids.
